New to Google+? Here are 10 Tips for Success!

Completely Fill Out Your Profile:  Be sure to add an actual photo of yourself, not just an avatar or other image.  Google has excellent privacy settings that can be used if there is personal information that you do not want visible to the public.  A complete profile page helps others learn more about you making it easier to determine if they would like to add you to their circles and / or communities.

2. Develop Your Circles:  Think about everyone in your contacts list.  Some of those people are friends, some are family, some are work associates, while others are acquaintances you have met online or at conferences.  Generally a post created for your work associates is not going to be of much interest to your family or friends.  You may also want to create a post for your friends that you do not want sent to your family or work associates.  Circles can help with that!  To develop your circles, you consider which groups of users you have and you simply drag people into the circle they belong in.  But what if someone falls into more than one circle?  No problem!  You can add users to multiple circles.  You can also create and delete circles as needed, so if you have an upcoming event, you can set up a circle to communicate with the event planners efficiently, then simply delete the circle after the event is over.

3. Join Communities:  Google Communities are a great way to find amazing resources and conversations about nearly any topic you could imagine.  There are thousands of communities to choose from, so look around and see what communities are out there to support your interests.  Some communities are public so anyone can join, others may require permission, so be sure your profile is complete!  Communities are a great way to connect with like minded people, pokies online sharing inspirational ideas and materials from around the world.

4. Post, Post, Post:  Please share your ideas with the world!  You have amazing thoughts, unique ideas, wonderful talents, and so much more to offer your communities and circles, so please share them.

5. Engage with Others:  There are multiple ways to engage with others in Google .  One of the simplest ways is to 1 someones post.   1 is similar to liking or favoriting on Facebook and Twitter.  Another way to engage with others in Google is to comment on someone’s post.  Adding meaningful interactions help to develop relationships within communities.  Users can also share posts they find interesting with their communities and circles.  Finally, posting publicly, and adding unique content is the highest form of engagement within Google .  Active engagement will help attract others to follow you and/or join your community.

6. Use #Hashtags:  When you are creating posts, be sure to use appropriate #hashtags.  #Hashtags simply help to further identify your post making it easier for others to find specifically what they are interested in.  Try to keep the #hashtags to 3 or fewer, so that you don’t overdo it.

7. Give Credit Where Credit is Due:  When you share a post written by someone else include “ Their Name” in your post to give the original author credit.  If someone has shared a post that you would also like to re-share with your circles at “h/t Their Name.”  H/t stands for hat tip this gives credit to the person who shared the post.

8. Add Content to Your Posts:  Make your posts more meaningful by adding text to your post when sharing photos, links, videos, and events.  We are very interested in what you are hoping to share, but often times others don’t have time to investigate what you have shared to discover why it is important.  Adding text to your posts to explain what you are sharing and why you feel it is important will help others see value in your posts.

9. Reply to Others:  When some comments on your post, ask questions, shares your post, and/or mentions you in their post, it is important to follow up with them quickly.  Answering questions while the discussion is still new in everyone’s mind is alway important.  Also, a quick thank you for the mention, a thanks for the wonderful comment, or thank you for sharing my post goes a long way when building relationships!

10. Try Out Other Google Features:  Check into the other features of Google such as Hangouts, Photos, Events, and Local to discover online chats, video chats, event sharing and discussions, and even find local hotels, restaurants, and attractions.  Download the Android or iPad Apps, and look into the Photo Backup to upload all of the photos from your mobile device to Google automatically.  Do this and so much more with Google

Getting Students to the Finish Line

School is slowly coming to an end, final grades are in and students are getting a bit restless. What can we do to continue to build on that strong sense of classroom community and keep students excited and energized?

Images can be used to make us laugh, cry, think, reflect, and ask those higher level questions. Plus, students love taking pictures of themselves and their classmates. How can we use images to reflect on the school year?

First, have students do an internet search for inspirational posters.  Looking at examples will help to get those creative juices flowing.  Next, have students take a picture(s) or locate images that communicates their answers to a question prompt. Then, challenge them to create a caption for their image that communicates their answers in a limited number of words or characters. eMINTS Conference Day 1

Today was the first day of the eMINTS Conference. It was a great day with many conversations about educational strategies, student engagement, and 21st Century Tools.  Educators from all around the US were in attendance and were eager to rejuvenate by collecting ideas and resources to take back to their classrooms.

Glen Westbroek, a junior high teacher from Utah”s Alpine School District, and Doug Caldwell, eMINTS Instructional Specialist, were among the presenters.  Their presentation was based around Glen”s tried-and-true way to encourage students to really think and discover how they can enhance real-world thinking through problem-solving with the use of free online tools.

The entry point for the session was the statement “When students think, they remember.” This introduction was so powerful for me because it really got me thinking about how I construct new learning.  Most of us construct learning by doing something. Doug shared with the participants, “The person doing the work, is doing the learning.”  Therefore, during this session the participants did an inquiry activity from a student”s perspective with Doug and Glen sharing facilitation strategies along the way.  This dynamic duo also shared and incorporated several free Web 2.0 tools into their unit plan such as: LiveBinder, Google”s Big Huge Labs,  Intel ® Teach Visual Ranking Tool and more.

There is something truly empowering when a presentation grabs and holds your attention for the entire session.  This experience may be exactly what educators might seek as they are working with students in 21st Century classrooms. Learning Exercises to Promote Thinking

When getting our brains started for the day, it is best exercised by thinking about something that triggers emotions and connections to the world around us. Goal Setting and Feedback To Support Learning

Recently a colleague shared with me a couple of articles written by Grant Wiggins on the use of feedback in the classroom. In his posts he highlighted several key strategies for trying to promote and incorporate quality feedback. He defines feedback as being “useful information on one”s effect or results, given a specific measurable goal.” He goes on to state that feedback should be descriptive in nature and free of judgements or praises. This made me think about the way feedback is used in the classroom. It seems that feedback is most often used as a form of assessment, but how effective is it in supporting growth in our learners? Could students benefit more from receiving feedback before a grade is given cheap inflatable toys?

“Whether feedback is just there to be grasped or is provided by another person, helpful feedback is goal-referenced; tangible and transparent; actionable ; user-friendly (specific and personalized); timely; ongoing; and consistent.” stated Wiggins. This statement outlines his essentials for providing feedback, which can lead to great gains for the recipient. He centers helpful feedback around these seven key elements. This led me to reflect on how we use scoring guides in the classroom. It seems as if scoring guides are one way that teachers can guide students in setting goals and producing high quality final products. However, what might be some other ways to use feedback in the classroom?

Here are a few ideas one classroom teacher shared with Wiggins for fostering feedback…

  •  Students are asked to drjeffsklar.com review their finished products. Before they hand them in they must reflect on what they did that was high quality, and one thing they could do differently to increase their quality of work. Students could then implement their own suggestions; revisions, or make adjustments to their products.
  • Students invite peers to provide feedback on what they did well and on what they could do better. Students could then implement their peer’s suggestions, and revise or make adjustments to their product.
  • Students are asked to review their work and share a brief statement explaining the goal behind their final product to the teacher or with a peer. This checks student understanding and their individual commitment to their project.
  • At the start of each class, students’ write down their goal(s) for the day. At the end of class reflect on what they did well and one thing they could have done better to meet their goal(s). Revision of the project can be performed for the next class period.
  • Students self-evaluate and reflect on the week and how they did in meeting their  weekly goal(s) or objective.
  • Teacher records student provided feedback and any additional efforts taken toward meeting their goals. This can be used as part of a whole group discussion to assist students in evaluating and setting future goals.

As educators we want students to self-evaluate and use peer evaluations to support educational growth. However, teaching students how to give feedback that is tangible is a tough task; this requires opportunities for students to work with and create feedback often.  As we go forth into the New Year and the second semester of the school year, what strategies might you use to foster the use of feedback in the classroom?

Taking Your Browser With You

During a collaboration session with a colleague, I recently reconnected with Google Chrome. He shared with me how his teachers and students are utilizing their Google account and the Chrome Web Store to install apps and bring new tools into the classroom. I had always used Chrome as a back-up internet browser, but it never occurred to me that it might be a valuable classroom tool. As a life long learner, I had to learn more. I found myself exploring and installing several apps and extentsions (a.k.a plug-ins) in order to locate tools that would enhance classroom instruction.

To get started exploring some of these tools…

  1. Install Google Chrome
  2. Click on settings and log-in to Chrome using a Google account.
  3. Go to Chrome Web Store and begin exploring

During this investigation, I discovered similar apps commonly installed on phones and tablets that could now be accessed from Chrome (Edmodo, Prezi, Voice Thread, Typing Tutor, etc).  Once the applications are installed it creates a collection of icons that launches the website or program australian online casinos pokies right from the browser. To get started syncing your browser settings…

  1. Click on settings  button from within the Chrome Browser
  2. Choose “Advanced Settings” to choose what features of the browser you would like saved.

While I am still exploring and learning more and more each day, I look forward to hearing how other educators might utilize this tool.

Sharing and Collaborating with SMART Notebook 11

How can educators access their SMART Notebook Gallery favorites from any computer and share them with their colleagues?

As I begin preparing for a lesson, it always seems like I am on a different computer. This can pose a problem, when you have resources you rely on. I am a cloud-computing addict. Several of my favorites are Google Drive (http://drive.google.com), Evernote (http://www.evernote.com) and Dropbox (http://www.dropbox.com). Dropbox has really opened my world up to being able to access what I want when I want it and from any device. While reading the Classroom21.net blog, I came across a post that inspired me. The title of this post is “Collaborate Using SMART Notebook and Cloud Storage”. Since I am a huge advocate for cloud storage and collaboration tools for personal and classroom use, I was hooked and wanted to know how this could be so. I followed the steps outlined in the post playerpicnic.com and I was up and going. I instantly had a link between my SMART Notebook Gallery favorites and my Dropbox.

This connectivity between my Dropbox and SMART Notebook 11’s Gallery is referred to as “Team Content”.  I now have a folder in my Dropbox that I can store my favorite gallery items in and share with collegues.  Educators could use this feature to eliminate the need to explore all that SMART Notebook gallery has to offer alone.  Simply share or invite colleagues to join your Dropbox folder and start sharing gallery resources.
